DanMachi, as it is often called, titillated fans with Hestia’s impressive bosom-hoisting ribbons, but remains unimpressive in other respects at least until the end of the first season. If you enjoyed its unique world and comedy, but less-than-unique plot and premise, these anime recommendations are sure to bring you some enjoyment.
For Fans of RPG But Not Actually an RPG
KonoSuba
On his way back from buying a new game, Kazuma Satou died a pathetic death. However, he awakens before the Goddess Aqua who gives him two choices: go to heaven or reincarnate into an actual fantasy world. Naturally, the gamer picks the fantasy world. Now Kazuma must deal with defeating an evil demon king, useless party members, and paying living expenses.
Konosuba is similar to DanMachi if it didn’t take its plot so seriously. Konosuba is all fantasy RPG-esque jokes while DanMachi is light fan service, some comedy, but also plot and power progression. Honestly, if you liked the comedy in DanMachi, KonoSuba is easily going to please you to no end.
Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash
Thrown into a fantasy land with no memories of their previous life, the strong among this new group of people bind together while the weak are left to fend for themselves. Grimgar tells the tale of the struggles of the weak as they pick up combat skills and fight the creatures of the world in order to earn a living.
While Grimgar has hints that the characters don’t belong in that world in the beginning, the rest of the series progresses very similarly to DanMachi. In both shows you have characters that start off so ridiculously weak, but through training, begin to find strength. This power in combat ramps up very quickly in DanMachi while remains a steady increase in Grimgar, though.
Gate
Japanese Self-Defense Force solider and otaku Youji Itami is in the Ginza district of Tokyo feeding his hobby one afternoon when a gate to another world opens and medieval soldiers flood modern day Japan. While Itami, in conjunction with the local police, manage to save many civilian lives, his hero status forces him to go beyond the gate with his fellow soldiers to explore a mysterious new world filled with swords, magic, elves, and dragons.
Both series involve the main characters going into what seems like another world. In DanMachi, the dungeons are filled with monsters and unique challenges while in Gate you follow a modern man learning about completely new cultures, governments, hierarchies, and creatures in a fantasy world. Both shows also feature the characters overcoming strong enemies with just ridiculously overpowered means.
For Fans of Dungeon Crawlers
Tower of Druaga
Every few years when the sky-god Anu extends his protection, the monsters in the Tower of Druaga weaken and adventurers go forth for fame and fortune, trying to reach the top. Like many adventurers, Jil is young and ready to make the push towards the top. While inexperienced in the Tower, his combat skills have the promise for him to go the distance.
DanMachi and Tower of Druaga are almost the same anime, the major difference being Cranel sucks (at first) and Jil is just ever-so better at fighting. Both stories center around a world in which a major dungeon is the focal point of the world and groups are constantly going in to search for riches. There is also an element of strength and weaknesses to the monsters within these dungeons as well.
Magi
After spending his life in isolation, Aladdin and his djinn Ugo set off on a journey to see the world. Soon after, he becomes friends with Alibaba, a young merchant that has ambitions of wealth, after he destroys his supply cart. In order to pay of the damages, Alibaba suggests the supremely powerful Aladdin helps him conquer a dungeon full of danger and wealth.
In both series, if you want to be anyone important or wealthy, you have to delve deep into a dungeon. By doing so, you are putting in for the reward, but it comes with a substantial amount of risk as well. While DanMachi features a more fantasy RPG world, Magi is more Middle East-inspired due to the story it is loosely based off of.
Problem Children Are Coming From Another World, Aren’t They?
Three extraordinary teenagers are blessed with psychic abilities, but are bored with their mundane lives. Unexpectedly, they are invited to go to a mysterious new place to participate in a high-stakes game using their abilities.
While not all the games in Problem Children are dungeon crawler-esque, it does feature a vast and interesting world not unlike DanMachi. The key difference in these series is that the main characters start off with vastly different levels of skill.

Fairy Tail

While Fairy Tail has some fantasy RPG elements to its world, it, like DanMachi, turns them into a fully fleshed out world that feels independent of the RPG shtick. Both worlds have a strong emphasis on guilds coming together to get things done, and they also have the unexpected similarity of featuring fan service, but not always being obnoxious about it.
Log Horizon
Like in Sword Art Online, Log Horizon starts off with thirty thousand Japanese players of the popular Elder Tale game being unable to log out of the game with the latest update. The story focuses on the socially awkward college student Shiroe, a master strategist in-game, and his friends as they try to navigate their new reality.
While Log Horizon takes people from the modern world and traps them in the game, the game becomes their reality much in the way it is in DanMachi. In both series, the characters come together in order to complete quests and and try to increase their skill and chance at moving further into harder places in the world.
Sword Art Online
With the aid of NerveGear technology, video game players can now experience their playable worlds like never before – in virtual reality. For Kazuto Kirigaya, his game of choice is Sword Art Online. After beta testing the game, he logs into the launch and finds himself, as well as ten thousand other players, trapped in the game world.
These days whenever something is vaguely fantasy RPG-esque, Sword Art Online becomes an almost mandatory recommendation. While the key difference is that Sword Art Online is a game and it is real life for DanMachi, there is no denying some key similarities in both worlds. Sword Art Online follows Kazuto Kirigaya or Kirito as he plays the beta of a new and upcoming popular VR-esque game, Sword Art Online (SAO). In SAO, gamers know that they are in a game but something goes wrong with the beta when they are all told by the creator that they are now trapped in the game and if they die in the game, they die in reality. Accepting this new reality, Kirito teams up eventually with Asuna Yuuki who is leading a team to try and escape this cruel game they are now trapped in!When looking at obvious similarities, they are both set in games or game-like worlds where the understanding and functionality is just like a game. In SAO, Kirito and the gang have more to work with in the sense of menus and item drops, but the way Bell levels up in Danmachi is also similar to a video game. This also includes the systems of magic and stronger weapons etc.There are also the themes of floor bosses as Bell tries to go down in the dungeon, while Kirito & co.
OP Protagonists are also a recurring theme that you will see in this article and between the shows. Bell grows with the character while Kirito is essentially OP throughout the whole show. I choose you.” Sucked into the new world, Kazuma finds out fast that Aqua is not only an idiot but useless as well! They have to work to get money but they need money to gear up. Introduce a useless Mage who can only cast one spell a day before collapsing, and a knight who is a defensive wall but also a massive masochist. This series will leave you in tears.When looking for reasons how Konosuba is like Danmachi, there are plenty. Both are set in an RPG-esque world that allows them to be unique and learn skills as need be in the cases of Kazuma and Bell.
Both also lay in heavily into the mission aspect and boss battles, though DanMachi is more adventure while Konosuba is more comedy. Also, Kazuma serves Aqua, a deity (he’s kinda forced to due to his circumstances) and Bell serves Hestia. The world settings themselves are also fantasy worlds that you will love to get wrapped into. Hai to Gensou no Grimgar opens with characters who know nothing but their names. Grimgar is now the world that they live in and they must work to survive. A team comes together to form a group in this kill or be killed, world. Together they work, filling various job classes such as a priest, a thief, a hunter, a mage, a warrior, and a dark knight. Going on missions in Grimgar, they now struggle to learn more about each other, themselves, and what to do. Characterized by unique art, many people have enjoyed this adventure show!Like Danmachi, in Gimgar right off the bat there is the danger of death.
Kill or be killed in Grimgar and Danmachi. No, Do overs. The worlds too are much like RPGs. Grimgar takes it a step further and has job classes that are specific. Everyone is poor in both series as well so you get to watch them grow! DanMachi, however, is a bit lighter hearted while Grimgar takes life by the horns!
Finally, between these two is the theme of existing within a game-like world while not being conscious of it; a common theme in this article. If you are looking for something a little more serious than Danmachi, but still heavy on the same themes, go for this show for sure!
Grimgar, Ashes and Illusions. Subaru Natsuki is buying dinner when he has a flashback or is it a flashforward to himself dying? Then he wakes up in a world where nothing makes sense. Suddenly someone is robbed and he helps her and she helps him. Trying to get the item back, he negotiates to get it until someone else was in wait for it. Then suddenly he feels pain, sees blood, and then wakes up again in the same scene as if nothing has happened?
Once again, his life seemingly starts from zero.Danmachi and Re:Zero have so many similarities such as a fantasy world setting, and both Bell and Subaru serve some beautiful women who dote on them a bit. There is a clear mystery as Subaru is killed over and over just to be incarnated again, and Ais is a mystery to Bell for a long time. There is a slight magic system that Subaru can harness, much like an RPG-like job class, while Bell is in a full blown job class. There are some differences, though. Subaru has no idea how he got to this world where Bell is just living in his world. So don’t worry. While both are great, you are not watching the same show, so like Damachi, you can enjoy Re:Zero too for their similarities while enjoying the differences as well.
Re:Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu Trailer. Kuuhaku is undefeatable. Made up of a pair of shut-in NEETs, Sora and Shiro are unstoppable until one day, they are challenged to a chess match by Tet, the god of Games. They then are plunged into a world called Disboard where the rule of the land is that major issues will be solved via games?!
Not only that but these games are high stake due to the rule where in order to play, both parties have to wager something of similar value to what the other party wagers. Suddenly this adorable Onii-san and Imouto are in a race to meet and defeat this god of games, Tet.Like Danmachi, a fantasy adventure is here on the table in No Game No Life. Much like video games, Sora and Shiro play high stake games that could cost them everything while Bell risks his life in the Dungeon to level up and bring home more funds to Hestia. Both take place in medieval cities and settings. Instead of crashing into dungeons like Bell, Sora and Shiro face their trials within the city. However, they still face harrowing trials. The romance is slightly there as well actually with the way that Shiro cares for Sora is similar to how Hestia cares for Bell even though she wishes that he would chase after her.

No Game No Life PV 2. If there was ever an argument for a Protagonist that was OP from the start, then it’s ya boy Momonga. The story opens with a popular VR game called Yggdrasil in its final server hours. Momonga is the most powerful wizard and master of a crazy strong guild Ainz Ooal Gown.
He decides to stay in the game until the servers shut down. The time passes and well nothing happens! He is still in the game but the clock goes away, and all of the NPCs have personalities?! Suddenly Momonga has an amazing yet unknown new world to explore and understand with Albedo at his side.Another anime similar to games is where we start. Clearly, like Danmachi, Overlord is in a game setting.
The difference is that badass Momonga knows that he is in a game while Bell does not. Momonga is OP from the start and eventually Bell gets there considering how his strength rapidly rises. Bell is a sweetheart to the core and Momonga is actually a massive softy even if he has to hide it for fear of what could happen. Adventures abound for these two protagonists while they both learn more and more about their worlds. The best part too is that Albedo chases after Momonga like Hestia chases after Bell and it’s so cute to watch. Adventurers and Armies alike gather to battle the demons, trying to reach the upper level and kill the monster Druaga and claim the Blue Crystal Rod. Each time the Summer of Anu comes they make it farther and farther into the tower and gain a toe hold. Enough time has passed and a small town called Meskia has grown at the towers base.
Will this summer be the summer that they make it all the way to the top?Both DanMachi and The Tower of Druaga deal with monsters in towers. Together with her group of adventures are forced to fight the Red Priest Rezo and his minions.Slayers is one of the best fantasy anime out there, and like anime like DanMachi use similar mechanics in their anime world. One such mechanic is that the adventures gain money by defeating monster or bandits.DanMachi is a new and exciting anime, one where the melding of game and real life are slight and if you never played a game, you might not notice.

Both take place in medieval cities and settings. Instead of crashing into dungeons like Bell, Sora and Shiro face their trials within the city. However, they still face harrowing trials. The romance is slightly there as well actually with the way that Shiro cares for Sora is similar to how Hestia cares for Bell even though she wishes that he would chase after her.

No Game No Life PV 2. If there was ever an argument for a Protagonist that was OP from the start, then it’s ya boy Momonga. The story opens with a popular VR game called Yggdrasil in its final server hours. Momonga is the most powerful wizard and master of a crazy strong guild Ainz Ooal Gown.
He decides to stay in the game until the servers shut down. The time passes and well nothing happens! He is still in the game but the clock goes away, and all of the NPCs have personalities?! Suddenly Momonga has an amazing yet unknown new world to explore and understand with Albedo at his side.Another anime similar to games is where we start. Clearly, like Danmachi, Overlord is in a game setting.
The difference is that badass Momonga knows that he is in a game while Bell does not. Momonga is OP from the start and eventually Bell gets there considering how his strength rapidly rises. Bell is a sweetheart to the core and Momonga is actually a massive softy even if he has to hide it for fear of what could happen. Konosuba is similar to DanMachi if it didn’t take its plot so seriously. Konosuba is all fantasy RPG-esque jokes while DanMachi is light fan service, some comedy, but also plot and power progression. Honestly, if you liked the comedy in DanMachi, KonoSuba is easily going to please you to no end.
Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash
Thrown into a fantasy land with no memories of their previous life, the strong among this new group of people bind together while the weak are left to fend for themselves. Grimgar tells the tale of the struggles of the weak as they pick up combat skills and fight the creatures of the world in order to earn a living.
While Grimgar has hints that the characters don’t belong in that world in the beginning, the rest of the series progresses very similarly to DanMachi. In both shows you have characters that start off so ridiculously weak, but through training, begin to find strength. This power in combat ramps up very quickly in DanMachi while remains a steady increase in Grimgar, though.
Gate
Japanese Self-Defense Force solider and otaku Youji Itami is in the Ginza district of Tokyo feeding his hobby one afternoon when a gate to another world opens and medieval soldiers flood modern day Japan. While Itami, in conjunction with the local police, manage to save many civilian lives, his hero status forces him to go beyond the gate with his fellow soldiers to explore a mysterious new world filled with swords, magic, elves, and dragons.
Both series involve the main characters going into what seems like another world. In DanMachi, the dungeons are filled with monsters and unique challenges while in Gate you follow a modern man learning about completely new cultures, governments, hierarchies, and creatures in a fantasy world. Both shows also feature the characters overcoming strong enemies with just ridiculously overpowered means.

Every few years when the sky-god Anu extends his protection, the monsters in the Tower of Druaga weaken and adventurers go forth for fame and fortune, trying to reach the top. Like many adventurers, Jil is young and ready to make the push towards the top. While inexperienced in the Tower, his combat skills have the promise for him to go the distance.
DanMachi and Tower of Druaga are almost the same anime, the major difference being Cranel sucks (at first) and Jil is just ever-so better at fighting. Both stories center around a world in which a major dungeon is the focal point of the world and groups are constantly going in to search for riches. There is also an element of strength and weaknesses to the monsters within these dungeons as well.

After spending his life in isolation, Aladdin and his djinn Ugo set off on a journey to see the world. Soon after, he becomes friends with Alibaba, a young merchant that has ambitions of wealth, after he destroys his supply cart. In order to pay of the damages, Alibaba suggests the supremely powerful Aladdin helps him conquer a dungeon full of danger and wealth.
In both series, if you want to be anyone important or wealthy, you have to delve deep into a dungeon. By doing so, you are putting in for the reward, but it comes with a substantial amount of risk as well. While DanMachi features a more fantasy RPG world, Magi is more Middle East-inspired due to the story it is loosely based off of.
Problem Children Are Coming From Another World, Aren’t They?
Three extraordinary teenagers are blessed with psychic abilities, but are bored with their mundane lives. Unexpectedly, they are invited to go to a mysterious new place to participate in a high-stakes game using their abilities.
While not all the games in Problem Children are dungeon crawler-esque, it does feature a vast and interesting world not unlike DanMachi. The key difference in these series is that the main characters start off with vastly different levels of skill.

Everyone is poor in both series as well so you get to watch them grow! DanMachi, however, is a bit lighter hearted while Grimgar takes life by the horns!
Finally, between these two is the theme of existing within a game-like world while not being conscious of it; a common theme in this article. If you are looking for something a little more serious than Danmachi, but still heavy on the same themes, go for this show for sure!

Then suddenly he feels pain, sees blood, and then wakes up again in the same scene as if nothing has happened?
Once again, his life seemingly starts from zero.Danmachi and Re:Zero have so many similarities such as a fantasy world setting, and both Bell and Subaru serve some beautiful women who dote on them a bit. There is a clear mystery as Subaru is killed over and over just to be incarnated again, and Ais is a mystery to Bell for a long time. There is a slight magic system that Subaru can harness, much like an RPG-like job class, while Bell is in a full blown job class. There are some differences, though. Subaru has no idea how he got to this world where Bell is just living in his world. So don’t worry. While both are great, you are not watching the same show, so like Damachi, you can enjoy Re:Zero too for their similarities while enjoying the differences as well.

Much like video games, Sora and Shiro play high stake games that could cost them everything while Bell risks his life in the Dungeon to level up and bring home more funds to Hestia. Both take place in medieval cities and settings. Instead of crashing into dungeons like Bell, Sora and Shiro face their trials within the city. However, they still face harrowing trials. The romance is slightly there as well actually with the way that Shiro cares for Sora is similar to how Hestia cares for Bell even though she wishes that he would chase after her.

No Game No Life PV 2. If there was ever an argument for a Protagonist that was OP from the start, then it’s ya boy Momonga. The story opens with a popular VR game called Yggdrasil in its final server hours. Momonga is the most powerful wizard and master of a crazy strong guild Ainz Ooal Gown.
He decides to stay in the game until the servers shut down. The time passes and well nothing happens! He is still in the game but the clock goes away, and all of the NPCs have personalities?! Suddenly Momonga has an amazing yet unknown new world to explore and understand with Albedo at his side.Another anime similar to games is where we start. Clearly, like Danmachi, Overlord is in a game setting.
The difference is that badass Momonga knows that he is in a game while Bell does not. Momonga is OP from the start and eventually Bell gets there considering how his strength rapidly rises. Bell is a sweetheart to the core and Momonga is actually a massive softy even if he has to hide it for fear of what could happen. Adventures abound for these two protagonists while they both learn more and more about their worlds. The best part too is that Albedo chases after Momonga like Hestia chases after Bell and it’s so cute to watch. The other part is that Albedo and Hestia will offer to go to extremes for Momonga and Bell respectively. Don’t take our word for it.

Unlike DanMachi, Outbreak Company doesn’t have anything to do with gaming other than the Otaku culture. The Tower of Druaga is home to hundreds of powerful demons who snack on normal humans.
However, every few years the demons lose their powers and are easier to kill. This is known as the Summer of Anu. Adventurers and Armies alike gather to battle the demons, trying to reach the upper level and kill the monster Druaga and claim the Blue Crystal Rod. Each time the Summer of Anu comes they make it farther and farther into the tower and gain a toe hold. Enough time has passed and a small town called Meskia has grown at the towers base.
Will this summer be the summer that they make it all the way to the top?Both DanMachi and The Tower of Druaga deal with monsters in towers. While DanMachi has not hinted that it is a game that is being played by many, it’s not quite ruled out yet. In the last anime of this list, we are viewing an anime that is twenty years old, but still good. Slayers takes place in a world overrun by warriors, monsters and demons. The young Lina Inverse wanders the lands, killing any bandits that she sees. Together with her group of adventures are forced to fight the Red Priest Rezo and his minions.Slayers is one of the best fantasy anime out there, and like anime like DanMachi use similar mechanics in their anime world. One such mechanic is that the adventures gain money by defeating monster or bandits.DanMachi is a new and exciting anime, one where the melding of game and real life are slight and if you never played a game, you might not notice.
It makes you think of games that you play every day. Just imagine that you are slaying a dragon just to buy a loaf a bread It’s not the best kind of life, no matter how much fun you have playing the game, it’s always better to visit and not live.
